Waving the Anti-Communist Flag While Hollowing Out the Country: DPP's Empty Patriotism Exposed
In response to the press conference titled “A Year of KMT-TPP Chaos in the Legislature, Pro-China Actions Undermining Taiwan’s Defense,” held on May 12 by Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) spokespersons Wu Cheng and Han Ying, which aimed to discredit the opposition, the Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) Legislative Caucus issues a solemn statement: The remarks made by the DPP spokespersons are utterly nonsensical and devoid of logic.
DPP’s Empty Rhetoric on National Security Legislation
The DPP claims to have proposed ten national security-related amendments, including the Anti-Infiltration Act, Act Governing Relations Between the People of the Taiwan Area and the Mainland Area, Act Governing Relations with Hong Kong and Macau, Nationality Act, The Communication Security and Surveillance Act, National Security Act, National Intelligence Services Law, Enforcement Rules of Cyber Security Management Act, Criminal Code of the Armed Forces, and the Criminal Code. The TPP caucus questions why, despite the DPP holding convener positions and agenda-setting power in all legislative committees, not a single one of these proposals has been reviewed or scheduled for deliberation in the past year and a half. This clearly exposes the DPP’s so-called stance of 'resisting China and protecting Taiwan' as nothing more than hollow slogans. The DPP and its legislators have no genuine regard for national interests but merely exploit national security issues to gain political advantage and deceive the public. Such behavior is truly despicable.
The TPP caucus also criticizes the Executive Yuan's draft of the Special Act for Strengthening Economic, Social, and Homeland Security Resilience in Response to International Developments. This bill uses “major economic changes” or “major disasters” as pretexts to justify draining the national treasury.
For instance, the proposal includes a budget of NT$150 billion under the pretext of enhancing 24-nautical mile surveillance around Taiwan to prevent “origin laundering.” Yet this has been repeatedly challenged as it clearly targets smuggling rather than “origin laundering.” The policy direction is flawed, and such misallocation is essentially throwing taxpayers’ hard-earned money down the drain.
The TPP caucus further questions why the defense expenditures, such as expanded coast guard deployment and unmanned vehicles have already been included in the regular government budget, yet are being proposed under this special act again. What is the justification for this duplicate allocation? The DPP government has failed to provide any clear explanation and instead continues to make excessive funding demands.
The TPP caucus condemns President Lai Ching-te’s administration for resorting to political labeling whenever it faces scrutiny, distorting and smearing the opposition’s legitimate role in budget oversight. This once again reveals the DPP as a incompetent party, pretending to be patriotic while draining resources.
